We have been learning about different ways we can travel and learning their names in French. We also discussed about how they move, "roule", "flotte" and "vole" (roll, float and fly).
We sorted some toy vehicles into these 3 categories. The children enjoyed sharing about which one they have already been on to travel.
At the painting centre, many boys and girls chose to paint different vehicles and write the name for them. They also used tangrams to create some vehicles.
Later this week we will do a graph on which vehicle they would prefer to use to travel. They are learning the expression "Je pars en.." to express how they want to travel.

On Friday we got to have a closer look at the egg that was soaking in the corn syrup. We were surprised to see that the shape of the egg had changed. It looked like the fluid from the egg had been sucked out. It looked a lot flatter. We then removed the corn syrup and added water instead.
Tuesday morning we had a closer look at the egg and to our surprise, we noticed that the egg looked fuller. Some children said that the water must have gone through the egg membrane.
While we were outside this morning, we wanted to see if the egg would bounce. We had seen somewhere that you could bounce the egg after being soaked in vinegar. It did bounce once at a low height and then we decided to drop it from higher up. This time it did not bounce but it broke. The yolk came out intact from the egg membrane. The yolk looked as if it had harden.
Have a look!
The first picture is when the egg was in the corn syrup. (March 2)
This is the egg after being removed from the corn syrup and was left in water. We can see that the shape now looks more like a regular egg.
February 27, 2020
This morning we had a closer look at the egg that was put in vinegar a few days ago. It was interesting to see that the shell had dissolved and only the membrane was left to protect the yolk. We could even see the yolk through the membrane.
The children got to hold it in their hand to see how it felt and make observations on what they notice. Some said it looked like jelly and jello. Some said it felt squishy and that it jingled. When asked what they thought happened to the egg, one said, "It looks like the egg sucked up all the vinegar inside the egg."
After we all got a turn to touch the egg, the boys and girls got to pour corn syrup over the it. We will now observe and see what happens to the egg for the next few days.
February 25, 2020
Today is Shrove Tuesday and the children were excited and wanted to help make some pancakes. The boys and girls said they were yummy! Have a look!
Tomorrow we begin Lent with our Ash Wednesday mass.
February 24, 2020
We are trying an experiment to see what would happen to a whole egg placed in vinegar. The children made predictions and shared their observations of what they are seeing so far. We will keep track and observe all the changes and see what happens in a few days. Stay tuned!!
What does vinegar smells like?
See all our predictions and observations too!

This week we began talking about les "métiers", community helpers. We have looked at some pictures of different types of jobs and what these people do to help us. The children were invited to paint some community helpers and explain what they do.
As this is Black History month, we have been introducing some historical black Canadians who have made a difference in our country. Today we talked about and listened to a story about Viola Desmond. The children were very attentive.
We have also been learning about different kinds of emotions and learning what they are in French. Many friends can now express how they feel using the French expressions. If they are happy, they will say, "Je suis content" or "Je suis triste" when they're feeling sad. They are enjoying playing the game "Les émotions" with friends. It is a fun matching game where it reinforces these expressions.
We also added a new "Détective de mots" (Word Detective). They are really enjoying looking around the room for the different winter activities and have been doing a great job at printing the words!

Welcome back and Happy New Year!
What a beautiful day today to be outside! We stayed outdoors a little longer to enjoy the sunshine. We brought out some water paint to see what we could do without water. The boys and girls used the snow on the paint pucks to get the some paint. They were able to paint some of the snow!
Some friends decided they wanted to build a fort but in our yard, the snow is packed quite hard with all the children walking around. Mme Pat took some children just outside our yard to get some fresh snow. They shoveled the snow onto the sleds and brought them back to our yard and used the fresh snow to start building their fort.
We have a large ice area in the yard where the children enjoy getting on their hands and knees and slide around. They know that it is not safe to walk or run on it so they have been very good at following the rules.
Once we got back indoors, we worked on our letters and numbers. Some friends also worked cooperatively on common art projects and helped each label their work.

Since yesterday we have been talking about what helps us to grow strong and healthy. We have looked at foods that are "sains" and "malsains" (healthy and unhealthy foods). The boys and girls recognized many healthy foods like carrots, broccoli, yogurt and many more! They also identified foods that are less healthy for us to eat and don't necessarily help us to grow healthy.
At one of our centres, we had some grocery store flyers. With them, the children cut out food pictures and sorted them into "sain" and "malsain". Today we had a SMARTboard activity where the children sorted out the pictures into these 2 categories. They did a fantastic job!

This week we talked about "les citrouilles", pumpkins. We discussed what we knew about them and about how they grow. The boys and girls knew many things about pumpkins! We watched a short video on their life cycle. This morning we talked a bit more about them and about what we could find inside pumpkins. We talked about the many different kinds of pumpkins too. Some are "petites", some are "grosses" and some are smooth to the touch while others can be bumpy.
We opened the pumpkin to have a closer look inside. We made predictions before opening it up about how many seeds we would be able to find. Some said 5 while others said it would be in the hundreds. Someone said 10 000 but one child said it wasn't possible because the pumpkin would explode with that many seeds!
We had some volunteers who wanted to touch the inside of the pumpkin. Some said it was slimy, cold, sticky and one even said it felt juicy. Lots of interesting observations and comments!

Today was "Take Me Outside" Day. We took our classroom outside to do some learning. We had some math, literacy, science and physical activity too.
We started with our routine of singing the national anthem and our prayer. In the school's backyard, we had a variety of material available for the children to use. We had a student who decided to do a survey, "Do you prefer a pepperoni or cheese pizza?" We had others drawing pictures and labeling their work. We had boys and girls exploring a variety of pumpkins that were brought in. The magnifying glasses helped to have a closer look at them.
We also had some math baskets filled with many manipulative. Some used the large wood cookies to make a ten frame. They did one to one correspondence, identified which one had more or less and played Tic Tac Toe with some of the pieces.
We had a few children who went on a nature scavenger hunt. With the pictures on their egg carton, they went looking for the items and placed them inside.
So much learning that can be done outdoors!

What a beautiful day to be outdoors to do some painting! We have been learning some new French vocabulary and decided to paint these words on a large mural. It was such a popular activity, we got 2 murals on the school wall! The boys and girls had some favourite words they wanted to paint first like "un chat noir", "un fantôme" and "une sorcière", just to name a few. They did a fantastic job! Once the murals were dried, we hung them up in the hallway.
October 10, 2019
We have been exploring shapes and learning them in French too. We walked around the school finding different shapes and identifying them by name. The boys and girls had a lot of fun searching for the shapes in our classroom! They were hiding everywhere! When the boys and girls found them, they named the shape in English and French and put them in a special basket. They were great little detectives, looking for them in every corner!
October 3, 2019
Here are some pictures from the last couple of days. We did artwork with paint and leaves, we worked with building blocks, we worked on making our new "calendrier d'octobre". We also enjoyed using technology to help us build with the K'nex and learning our colours in French.
October 1, 2019
Yesterday we began our discussion with a math activity, "Which one doesn't belong?", "Quel n'appartient pas?" The boys and girls looked at the photo of 4 different leaves and had to say which one they thought didn't belong there and explain why. Some said the darker leaf because the other ones were lighter in colour. Some said the top right because this one didn't have any pointy edges. Some thought it was the bottom right because the leaf is smaller than the other ones.
It is interesting to hear their thinking and see how they interpret things.
Following this activity, we had a science experiment with leaves. The children sorted the leaves by colour and cut them in pieces to put them in small jars. A small amount of rubbing alcohol was added in the jars. Strips of paper towels were added to the jars. We waited until this morning to see if any changes would happen. We noticed that the colour of the leaves seeped through the paper towel and left a faint colour on the paper towel. The colour matched the leaves that were in the jars.

September 26, 2019
Today we started to make our apple sauce. We first discussed about what we knew about apples. Where do they come from? How do they grow? What colour are they? What can we do with them?...
A few boys and girls talked about going to the apple orchard. Some also said they had an apple tree at their house. We read a book about apples and followed with a tally of all the apples that were brought in. "Les pommes rouges" (red apples) were the winners! We had 27 of them!!
Our little friends got the chance to use the apple peeler and enjoyed eating some of the apple peels and some pieces of apple too!
We will eat the apple sauce tomorrow morning after our Terry Fox walk. We will send all the bowls and spoons home tomorrow. Thank you for sending apples with your child! They enjoyed the activity and we can't wait to taste it tomorrow!
September 25, 2019
With this beautiful day, we decided to have an outdoor classroom. We worked on our letters and some writing as well. We had many friends who were interested in painting the first letter of their name. Learning in a different environment is always fun!
September 23, 2019
We began our day with a conversation about seasons. We learned that we are now in a new season and that it's not "l'été" (summer) anymore but "l'automne" (fall). We looked at some fall pictures and discussed what we saw and what in the picture made us know that it was fall. We also watched a short video on how and why leaves change colour in "l'automne". We learned a big word "chlorophyll"! We learned that because the days are getting shorter the leaves are producing less chlorophyll so the leaves change colours.
During centres, the children explored numbers, letters and demonstrated their problem-solving skills while building at various building activities like the K'nex and wooden blocks. They also explored colours while at the painting centre. They noticed that we see many of these colours at fall.
It was also nice to see our older kinders helping our new friends while at their centres.
Have a look!
September 20, 2019
The first week of school, the children got the chance to have a look at our school garden. This morning we went back to the backyard to have another look at it. They got to see what has been growing and changing since the first week. The boys and girls noticed that the tomatoes were getting bigger and some of them are turning orange.
We then went into our yard and had our snack outdoors since it was so nice! The children thought it was a fun idea and enjoyed eating outdoors.
September 19, 2019
This morning, for the first time this year, we got the K'nex out for the children to explore and build. Some children decided to build using instructions while others used their imagination to create their structures. We had many friends who wanted to share what they had made.
To share at consolidation time, the children are required to get a piece of paper and write their name. They also will write a word or one/few letters for our new JKs. They all did a great job! The children had the opportunity to ask them questions about their creations.

Please make sure to keep your child's library book in the special bag that was prepared for your child. It has a special bar code that identifies your child.
Have a look at how attentive they are!
September 9, 2019
Last week we talked about our expectations for when we are on the carpet and especially when someone is talking. We learned that it is important for our eyes to be looking at the speaker, for our ears to be listening, our mouth is silent, we are sitting nicely and our hands are in our lap.
We learned these body parts in French too! The children learned that when they hear "Donne-moi 5" (Give me 5), this means we give the speaker our total attention. We've put up the pictures in our classroom if we ever forget. The boys and girls have been doing a great job!
